Milan, Salone del Mobile & Falling in Love with Design All Over Again

There are certain places in the world that stay with you long after you leave. For me, Milan was one of them.

This spring, Judd and I traveled to Milan to attend Salone del Mobile, one of the world's most influential design shows. Walking through the city felt like stepping into a living work of art. It's a place where creativity, innovation, fashion, architecture, and lifestyle collide in the most breathtaking way.

The energy was palpable. Everywhere we turned, there was something to discover. From the showrooms and exhibitions to the cafés, storefronts, and streets themselves, Milan was bursting with style, confidence, and what I can only describe as "design sexy." The clean lines, bold colors, sculptural lighting, luxurious textures, and innovative concepts pushed creativity to another level. Every space felt intentional, artistic, and emotionally evocative.

What struck me most was the contrast between old and new. One moment you're surrounded by sleek modern interiors with dramatic contemporary furnishings, and the next you're gazing up at ornate Gothic architecture rich with history and craftsmanship. That juxtaposition, modern sophistication alongside timeless European beauty, was absolutely breathtaking. Milan somehow manages to feel both cutting-edge and deeply rooted in history at once.

Salone itself was remarkable. The scale of creativity on display was staggering, but what truly stood out was how much emphasis was placed on experience and emotion within design. Spaces felt layered, personal, immersive, and alive. There was a strong focus on sculptural forms, rich materiality, warm minimalism, statement stone, bold upholstery colors, dramatic lighting, and craftsmanship that elevated every detail.

And the shopping... dangerous in the best possible way.

Every street held another beautifully curated boutique, luxury showroom, or hidden gem. Judd and I found ourselves constantly stopping to admire details, textures, architecture, merchandising, and styling. Our eyes were drinking in everything around us. It felt romantic—not just because we were in Italy together, but because we were experiencing something we both love so deeply. Design has always been how we connect, dream, and experience the world together, and Milan amplified that in the most beautiful way.

One of my biggest takeaways was a simple reminder: great design is never just about aesthetics. It's about emotion, storytelling, atmosphere, and creating experiences that make people feel something. Milan reminded me why I fell in love with design in the first place.
