Without fail, every holiday season, I have friends and clients coming out of the woodwork for holiday tips & trends! My biggest take is, "don't fall into the trap that Christmas decor should only be red and green....” It’s not at all! Christmas is all the colors, and we love to celebrate them all. If red and green is your Christmas jam, that is amazing! Consider throwing in another color or adding shades of green, like limes, evergreens and emeralds together and with the reds, try adding blush, pink, fuchsia, burgundy and magenta with the reds. All of these together will take your red and green theme to a new level!
If you’re looking to have Christmas décor be cohesive with your home, take the colors you have and start building your ornament base.
The Ultimate Tree
Balls
- You need all different sizes, textures, and colors. These could be white, silver, gold… or incorporate colors like blue, pink, or purple - the options are ended!
- Be sure to purchase enough. It is better to have more and return what isn’t needed than to have a skimpy tree with mainly the front done! You need multiple sets, and should be looking for balls that are 6-8” to put on the inside of the tree to hide those bare spots and reflect light.
- Use a medium size 4-5” more middle of the tree branches, and smalls 1-3” for closer to the tips. Spread these out evenly throughout the tree. If you want a full tree, buy many sets of each.
Ribbon
- There are different ways to apply ribbon. You can circle the tree and make sure to push in or twist tie when you push in to reduce movement! You can hang them straight down all the way around, or doing the same push-in, you can cut 20” pieces and loop in different directions and mix ribbons. Or do it all… how fun!
- These all must be wire ribbons. Ideally 3-4” at least. For a simple look, get a sheer ribbon 1-1.5 inches and tie on with long tails on the tips of the branches and just keep it simple. These have no wire and will just flop! You can also try double-sided satin ribbons.
Sprays
- We recommend sprays, branches, berries, etc, to use in the tree to poke out or lay on top of the tree branches. Of course, we adore these with glitter. (AKA Magic Christmas Dust). You can also purchase garland, like glitter gold leaves and wrap those around the tree.
Ornaments
- You will want some that go with your theme, of course, but this is where you put your special memories up.
Topper
- Are you a Star, angel or bow person? Everyone is different. I use a bow at the top of mine, and something to make a little vertical arrangement, but on the top of my tree that most people don’t realize is a paper start that Hunter made when I moved to this home. I didn't have a star, and he went to make me one. I adore it and will always cherish it.
Tree Skirt or Collar
- Big debate here. People go back and forth on that one. I generally load up under my tree so fast with wrapped gifts that you wouldn’t be able to tell either way!
Tablescape Beauty
- Time to pull out your pretty pieces. Use your everyday vases and fill them with cedar and greenery of the season! You can also mix in sprays or ornaments. Don’t feel like you need to keep it all real. Mix and have fun!
- For a pretty tablescape, try glass trees with cedar laying on the table runner and trees mixed in with candles in beautiful candle sticks or glass.
- Wrap presents in your color theme to help do double duty, wrapping and décor!
