Creating a design that reflects a couple’s differing personal styles can be challenging (to say the least). When I work with clients, I always aim to reflect both of their aesthetics in the space, but when it came time to design my own bedroom I was less than inspired on how to mesh our two styles together. Judd is a lover of modern minimalist designs, and I tend to gravitate towards bolder, more feminine styles. How could I possibly tie our two looks together, while still keeping the design cohesive?
I decided to begin with matching nightstands for Judd and I, to keep the space balanced and prevent it from feeling too cluttered or eclectic. I went with the Iris Nightstands from the Universal Furniture x Nina Magon collection for our bedroom. These chic, low-profile nightstands offer hidden storage, as well as open-shelving for me to display some of my favorite décor. Plus, they tie our styles together perfectly & create symmetry on either side of the bed.
But then I had another conundrum… how should I style them? So many couples face this same dilemma, so I decided to write down my best tips for styling a his & hers space and make a blog post. Most importantly, when designing for a couple you want to keep the design balanced while making the space feel customized to your different personalities.
Styling Hers:
For my nightstand, I wanted to bring in more of my feminine energy while also adding more personal touches. I began by anchoring the nightstand with a large, framed photo from our wedding and a sculptural lamp from Mitzi Lighting. Both of these pieces added height and substance to the bedside table, making it easy to style with just a few more delicate accessories.
Next, I wanted to bring in a pop of green with some fresh flowers on my side of the bed. I picked out one of my favorite white modern vases and filled it with a few fresh stems. Having fresh flowers or greenery around is one of my favorite little treats to myself. Even if you can’t keep flowers around constantly, it’s a great way to occasionally bring in new energy and make yourself feel a little pampered.
Once all of this was in place, I added the finishing touches! Bringing in a handful of books and my favorite Jason Wu perfume added a dash more of my personality, and made me feel right at home. I also carved out a dedicated spot to drop my rings at the end of the night so they’re never misplaced.
Styling His:
For Judd’s nightstand I knew I wanted the majority of the décor to be fully functional as well as attractive (especially since Judd is not a big fan of purely decorative accessories). I began his nightstand styling as I did my own, by adding a wedding photo of ours and one of our chic new lamps for height.
Once those foundational pieces were in place, I added some greenery to Judd’s nightstand by placing some stems in a structural black vase. I also added a sleek glass carafe to keep fresh water within reach at all times. To finish off the décor, I placed a delicate black dish for Judd to drop his father’s cuff links and his custom Brizo pocket square at the end of the night (it’s those little details that make a house really feel like home).
Overall, styling a His & Hers space is all about balance. You need to balance your two personal styles, balance your belongings, and balance your separate spaces. I was able to create balance in our bedroom by utilizing our matching nightstands and then customizing our décor in a way to meet our own individual needs and styles.
