Interior Design Tips For Moving Out

Image
Did you know June is the most popular month to move? It may seem like the most convenient but keep in mind, the gas prices surge as does the movers rates. But if you are like me and this is the best time for you, here are some tips on how to approach packing and moving like a designer.

As a designer, I think my approach might be a little different as is my situation. Since we already have a home in Indiana, we have a different approach than most. That’s right, we already have bedrooms awaiting us there and a house full of furniture. In saying that, we have had some place holders at the Indy house for a few years waiting for this merge of homes. I can’t wait to finally get our furniture pieces all together to complete this puzzle. It’s like a furniture love affair. Ha! Here is how the house is now.

Here are some tips that I would recommend if you are making a move this summer even if it’s two doors down.
Scale Down
Chances are, you might not have another home ready and waiting but what you will have is a different floor plan and possibly a different scale let alone the fact that our taste changes throughout the years. We learn, we refine, and we are always striving to perfect our own style. Make sure that you know the design direction you would like to move forward with for your new home.

If you aren’t sure, then reach out to the interior design team at GHI and we will be with you every step of the way to ensure you build a solid design foundation with good choices and investments to keep building on over the years. You don’t want to waste your time or money moving items that you will confirm don’t work once you get to your new home.
Next, Inventory!
Write down each piece of furniture and write keep, sell or donate next to it. If it’s a keep, write down the measurements and confirm they will fit in the home. Take a photo of each piece to be included in your new design plan for your reference. As much as we suggest paring down, please don’t get rid of everything and then have to purchase out of desperation because items aren’t in stock. Get a plan together! Make sure you have a sofa to sit on and table and chairs
Get Organized
Go through your desk, drawers, kitchen and start the purging asap! Even before you start packing boxes, weed through what you have so that you know when the time comes to box it up, it’s everything you know you need. Be tough on yourself, do you really need this? Does it still make you happy? Are you keeping it out of guilt? Remember loved ones don’t want to be remembered for giving you something you don’t actually like and feel resentful having to keep. Gift and bless someone else and you can always take a photo of it to remember.
Get That Label Maker Out
Make sure to pack those boxes tightly and when you seal them up label with the Room in the same corner, what is in the box and if it’s fragile or not. You will thank yourself for taking the time to prepare for the other end of the move.

P.S Before you start packing, take photos and video tape of your items so that you can inventory on the other side of the move and win any upcoming debuts if needed.

I guess I better get back to packing myself. You’ve got this and remember to pack just a little bit at a time! Stay tuned for our Part 2 Designer Moving Tips in July.
